Abusive relationship counseling and therapy

Treating victims of abuse requires specialized training. Some believe that short term counseling and advocacy will lead to a successful treatment while others consider a long term approach to be the best way to help a victim to work through the abuse. The goal is to keep them from getting back into a similar situation in future relationships. Crisis intervention is essential in working with those affected by domestic violence, advocacy and long term counseling is an effective means of treating victims of abuse.

The best way to help someone who is in a abusive relationship is to provide information that will let them know what their options are for a safety plan. It is important to emphasize the need for the victim to get out of a dangerous situation. Most domestic violence sessions focus on educating the client on the dynamics of abuse which can help minimize the feelings of isolation and guilt.

Since victims of abuse have experienced emotional trauma, effective counseling will help them deal with these issues over time to heal and recover. Group therapy is used to help the victim to socialize and identify with others who have experienced the same forms of abuse. Therapy focuses on issues of safety, empowerment, validation, strength, education, restoring clarity of judgment, understanding oppression, making decisions, and healing the effects of trauma.

Studies show that counseling is a valuable method used to offer immediate, short-term help to individuals who experience an event that produces emotional, mental, physical, and behavioral distress or problems. Effective problem solving and coping skills is used to help the victim reduce the intensity of emotional, mental, physical and behavioral reactions to abuse.

Emergency crisis intervention counselors will provide a safe environment where they can obtain information to assess a victims strengths, coping skills, and support system. Most individuals response pattern during counseling are:

  • Emotional reactions such as fear, anger, guilt, or grief
  • mental reactions in which they are having difficulty concentrating, confusion, or nightmares,
  • physical reactions such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue , or stomach problems
  • behavioral reactions as in sleep and appetite problems, isolation, or restlessness.
  • Social service agencies help the individual to become better equipped to cope with future difficulties by talking about what happened, so the victim can recover from the crisis and to prevent serious long-term problems from developing. Local and national telephone hotlines are available to help individuals facing domestic violence, or abuse.
