Elderly Jobless And Unemployed Workers

The rise in elderly unemployment has seen a surge, since 2001 more older men and woman are having a hard time finding companies that will hire them. Interestingly many of these elderly have 30 plus years experience in finance, medical and engineering careers. Employers have decided to not hire many who have retired from these fields to make room for recent college graduates.

Job openings must interview qualified candidates so may elderly do find that they get plenty of job interviews but no call backs or offers to hire them. The recession and a down economy has many corporations looking for ways to cut costs and one of the ways to do this is to downsize, layoff and give early retirement packages to workers.

The elderly are a growing group of workers who are unable to find a job in this present economy. The employment benefits and social security payments is not enough to cover many of the inflation costs of owning a home, or having transportation. Many elderly have had to sell their homes and stop driving just to make ends meet.

Will I Be Employed When I Grow Up?

Companies that do hire elderly can not pay them much. Top employers of elderly are fast food restaurants who are forced to pay minimum wages and cut back on working hours to on call or part-time.

Poverty is striking the elderly community hard, it is not easy to pay the bills or find enough money for food. Many married elderly couples are finding that when one of them gets ill or sick the money coming in the household must go to cover medical expenses.

Statistics show that the number of unemployed elderly in the united states has risen to 12.5 million the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Commerce, reflect the depth of the economic downturn. But Americans are not the only ones faced with unemployment. The number of older Taiwanese workers who are unemployed has doubled over the past 10 years, which indicates increased employment barriers for this group.

Elderly employment includes department store cashier, store greeter, fast food cashier, security guard, cafeteria worker, school crossing guard, city bus driver, real estate agent, commission sales, telemarketing, school librarian, or library clerk. These are just a few of the positions that are available for elderly if they are willing to work part-time, seasonal or on call for a lower pay wage.

New reform needs to be put into place to help corporations see new innovative ways to utilize the experience of elderly workers.

You are quite right and I have personal experience with this problem. I am 52 so not yet elderly but a more seasoned worker with 28 years of experience in the financial services field. I was layed off almost 3 years ago and I have found that I am either over qualified when I seek a lesser job or too old if I look for a position on my level. It is quite frustrating. I don't know what can be done but I have tried everything to fit correctly into prospective employers plans to no avail. Thank you for raising this subject.

It's really hard for the elderly to find jobs. Those who retired from service are luckier because they have retirement benefits, but even that doesn't fill their needs. So, like HScheider says, they find themselves landing in low-paying jobs for their needs. The seniors are being promised discounts but that's not enough, too. The moral here is, to live a frugal life while still young and active to be able to save enough for the golden days.
