The American hip hop group called The Sugarhill Gang is famous and known for the hit song Rapper's Delight in the year 1979. This is when they did the instrumental track from the classic hit Good Times. The team Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank and Master Gee are originally from Englewood New Jersey making this multi platinum hit made them the pioneering group of rap history.

Reports show that they are also the first rap group to perform on American Bandstand while being the first hip hop group to have a gold single but they had hits such as Apache and Eighth Wonder performed on Soul Train in 1981. It has been reported that Bob Sinclar collaborated with Wonder Mike and Master Gee on his 2009 release Lala Song.

As you are probably aware it is considered to be the song that first popularized hip hop in the U.S. and around the world. Interestingly the song was ranked on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, as well as on VH1's 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs.

Other interesting facts is that the song inspired Blondie's 1980 hit Rapture, which is considered by some to be the second major hip hop hit after Rapper’s Delight. Before the invention of samplers the strings and piano sections sound so close to the original recording that it's possible that portions of the track are in fact samples taken directly from Good Times

Most of the rappers who performed in clubs did not want to record. Chip Shearin job on the song was to play the bass for 15 minutes straight, with no mistakes, something no one had ever done before. It has been reported that like many songs from the time, Rapper's Delight was performed over the breakdown section of a disco hit played by the group Positive Force, that later filed suit for copyright infringement which earned him future royalties on the song Chic's Good Times.

Many have talked of how it was the first Top 40 song to be available only as a 12-inch extended version in the U.S. As for Sugar Hill Records it was a rap music record label founded in 1979 by husband and wife Joe and Sylvia Robinson with Milton Malden.

As story has it they were able to get the financial funding of Morris Levy, the owner of Roulette Records. So as history would have it The Sequence, Grandmaster Flash, Funky Four Plus One, Crash Crew, Kool Moe Dee, The West Street Mob, and Melle Mel joined the label

Then in the early 80s, the Robinsons bought Levy out with several years of success, ncluding 26 Gold Records. It is nice to know that they pioneered the music video production innovating a cassette single.

It was in 1995, Rhino Records purchased all the released and unreleased masters owned by the Sugar Hill label

Thanks for the video, I've never seen the original perofrmance of Rapper's Delight, which is one of my alltime favorite songs!! Love it.

I think it's safe to say that it also inspired The Clash's Magnificent Seven (1980).
