Learning to play guitar as a teenager he taught himself after being inspired by blues music. He eventually started playing in a few bands the rocking kings and the tomcats. Hendrix did a tour in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1962 in which he created a new bank called the king casuals.

Later playing backup to famous performers such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke, and the Isley Brothers. This lead him to form a group Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, that played all around NY City. It was in 1966 that Jimmy met Chas Chandler who became his manager then he went to London to join Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell as the start of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
