Issues About Unemployment and Underemployment

The economy has hit hard on a global scale, and one of the top indicators of whether or not we’re pulling out of a bad economy is the unemployment rate. You hear about it a lot on the news, but few broadcasts speak about the related issue of underemployment, so a distinction needs to be made in order for you to get the full picture.

Officially, a person is considered unemployed if they actively seek out work (meaning apply everywhere, try to get interviews, etc) for a minimum of four weeks, with no success.

But there are many extenuating circumstances that can have a citizen unemployed, wanting a job, but unable to meet the requirements of actively seeking one. For example, you might be ill or caring for someone who is ill.

The Labor Department counts these individuals as part of the underemployed group. Those with personal issues or people working part time because there are no full time jobs available or all part of the underemployment sector of our society.

The reason extra steps had to be taken to account for special situations is because you can’t simply take every citizen who doesn’t have a job and count them as unemployed. You have many people who choose not to work, for different reasons – stay at home parents, wealthy due to inheritance, and so on.

Some sort of true gauge had to be enacted that allowed us to measure the volume of people who wanted a job – full time employment specifically - but were restricted by some obstacle and unable to acquire one.

If you want to see a true reflection of the employment situation in America, you’ll keep an eye on the underemployment rate – because if someone has a situation where they’re part of this group, it eliminates them from the unemployment calculations completely, making the economy appear to be better than it actually is.

Economists argue about whether or not the governmental and media use of the unemployment rate is unfair to the voters and those making decisions for their future based on unemployment statistics.

Disagreements usually arise prior to a major election, and those screaming the loudest will be the ones who want to imply that the current administration is fudging the truth about employment stats.

The underemployment rates have beeb readily available since the 1970s. You simply have to be diligent enough to conduct research and get to the bottom of the truth yourself.

Interesting! I've been through some periods of unemployment and it really can get tough. I never considered the "underemployment" aspect. Thanks for the hub.

MarianG Thanks for stopping by. It appears, that underemployment has always been an issue in certain communities and it seems to get ignored because it is not a popular politic "in thing". This is only my opinion.

This is so very true. Many people only know about unemployment and not underemployment.

True, underemployment is not talked about much in politics. Thanks MiscDiva.
