A lawyer must investigate the complaint and make sure it is valid and the court clerk will draft up a summons then the defendant is made aware of the charges against them, then they are required to respond to the court.
These legal proceedings could take months and even years to come to a final conclusion, from the pleading to the pre-trial, then the trial and judgment as well as the appeal. If the judgment is for the plaintiff, then the defendant must comply under penalty of law with the judgment.
