What is the Bridesmaid Role at the Wedding?

By

To understand what a bridesmaid does at the wedding one needs to learn the definition of what a bridesmaid is. Brides have so much to think about when planning their wedding day they need to have a person who will assist and help them stay organized. This person is usually a close friend or even a relative. Simply, because the bride will need a person in this position to be reliable and trustworthy.

Now the people who participate directly in the wedding ceremony are called the wedding party and in most cases the bridesmaid is also the maid of honor. There can be several bridesmaids depending on how large the bride wants her wedding party to be.

Some of the bridesmaid responsibilities include helping the bride pick out her wedding dress, planning of the bridal shower, picking out decorations and helping plan the bachelorette party. Communicating with the guests about the wedding registry, and if there is a wedding planner, being of assistance with unexpected issues that come up that the bride is unable to address.

Each wedding situation is different and the amount of bridesmaid duties will vary, some brides want to handle all these tasks themselves while others have the groom take care of all the details of getting the wedding together.

If the dual role of bridesmaid and maid of honor overlap, there may be a need to contact florists, caterers and finding locations for photo shoots and reception. Wedding invitations and announcements will need to be labeled and sent out, as well as helping out at the dress rehearsal, there are so many things that can be missed if the bride does not have a bridesmaid to help her with a checklist.

Bridesmaid Checklist

Some bridesmaid planning tools include having a checklist of items that need to be done in preparation for the wedding day. The costs of dresses, shoes, travel expenses, shoes and accessories will need to be budgeted to cover all the bridesmaids and their wedding attire. Making sure the right colors are chosen to compliment the wedding décor as well as managing the makeup, hairdressers and manicures.

Being a good hostess is also one of the duties of a bridesmaid, helping with the DJ and the photographer, collaborating with the guests and making sure things go as smoothly as possible. Also the bridesmaid dress may not be as glamorous as one would like but remember it is the bride’s day to shine.

Keep close tabs on the other bridesmaids so that there is not unexpected challenges that most likely are going to arise. The key is to watch your expenses and communicate with the bride before making major decisions

Bridesmaids do have roles to perform. They are the ones who help organize a hen's party if the bride consents to it.

In a church wedding, just like ours, our bridesmaids along with their respective groomsmen partners were assigned to light the candles, cover us with the veil and put the cord.

Also, finding what the bride is missing - key task - I drove my bridesmaid crazy. Important to keep track of the bride's scatter brain items.
